Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for January 13–19, 2025, are Helena Ikpotokin (women’s track and field) and Daniel Gonzalez Longardela (men’s basketball).

Ikpotokin, a third-year science student from Dublin, Ireland, had a spectacular performance at the Winnipeg Open Athletic (WOA) Winter Open in Winnipeg, Manitoba, held on January 17 and 18. She won the 60 metres (7.94), 200 metres (25.53), and 300 metres (40.75) sprints in the same day.

“After last season, Helena made a decision to increase her level of commitment, effort, and attention to detail, and her performances this season have been the result of a great deal of hard work,” said coach Damon MacDonald.

Longarela is a fifth-year Master of Business Administration student from Madrid, Spain, who has been playing at an all-star level all season long. In UPEI’s 82-56 win over Dalhousie University on January 18, the veteran centre recorded his fifth double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also added three assists and two steals.

“Daniel has continued to be the anchor for our defence,” said head coach Darrell Glenn. “He rebounds, protects the paint, and is always looking to help his teammates whenever they get beat off the dribble.”
