UPEI Track and Field athlete Alaere Peterside to compete at U SPORTS Track and Field Championship March 9
UPEI Track and Field competitor Alaere Peterside will compete in the U SPORTS Track and Field Championship this weekend in Winnipeg. The championship is being hosted by the University of Manitoba at the James Daly Fieldhouse from March 7–9, 2024.
Peterside is a first-year science student from Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She captured a gold medal in the high jump at the AUS Track and Field Championships on February 25 at the Université de Moncton, surpassing the competition by clearing a height of 1.65m. The participant closest to Peterside’s mark jumped 1.59m. She was also named AUS Rookie of the Year and, as such, is a contender for U SPORTS Rookie of the Year.
“At the AUS championships, Alaere found her early season form again, clearing heights by a wide margin,” said head coach Colin MacAdam. “She claimed gold and earned her spot in the U SPORTS championship to cap off a successful season.”
Jane Vessey, director of UPEI Athletics and Recreation, said she is very proud of Peterside and wishes her a great weekend in Winnipeg.
“After Alaere’s stellar performance at the AUS championships, we are excited to see how her journey unfolds on the national stage at the U SPORTS Track and Field Championships. We hope she has a wonderful experience and builds on her successful season as a first-year student-athlete."
Peterside is scheduled to compete in the high jump competition at 2:30 pm (CST) or 4:30 (AST) on Saturday, March 9. The 2024 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships will be available to watch here:
