Sydney Cummins and Jace Colley named UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for February 12–18, 2024, are Sydney Cummins (women’s basketball) and Jace Colley (men’s basketball).
A nursing student from Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Cummins is an effective and pivotal member of the team, especially on the defensive end. In the February 16 win over the Cape Breton University Capers, the third-year guard put five points, seven rebounds, and five assists off the bench.
“Sydney's impact on the team has been huge, especially in the second semester, as we make this push to playoffs,” said head coach Matt Gamblin. “She is a glue player and consistently shows her toughness day in and day out, with hustle plays, taking charges, and putting her body on the line.”
Colley is a business student from East Preston, Nova Scotia. He was exceptional in Friday's must-win game. The fifth-year forward scored a team-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting with 13 rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and an assist in a 79-78 win over the Cape Breton University Capers.
“Playing almost the entire game, Jace gave us a tremendous effort,” said head coach Darrell Glenn. “He led us on offence with a team-high 22 points and anchored us on defence with 13 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Jace plays at an elite level, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do during the AUS Championships this weekend.”
