Lauren Rainford and Kamari Scott named UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for February 5–11, 2024, are Lauren Rainford (women’s basketball) and Kamari Scott (men’s basketball).
Rainford is an education student from Toronto, Ontario. She showcased her all-around game last weekend in a split with the Memorial University Sea-Hawks. The fourth-year guard averaged 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 3.0 blocks, and 2.5 steals per game. Rainford also eclipsed 1,000 career points in the February 9 game, joining seven other Panthers to reach the milestone.
“Lauren put together a very impactful Game 1, which saw her eclipse the 1000-point mark,” said head coach Matt Gamblin. “But what really stood out to me were her assists and rebounds this weekend. She battled in Game 2 as we fell short in our final home game of the season. Lauren has had a standout career with the Panthers, and it was very exciting to be able to deliver a senior send-off together with her sister, Aiden.”
Scott is a fourth-year business student from Malton, Ontario. He was unstoppable last weekend and willed his team to two big wins to keep their playoff hopes alive. In a sweep of the Memorial University Sea-Hawks, Scott averaged 28.0 points (including scoring a career-high 38 points on a career-best seven made three-pointers on February 9), 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 3.0 steals per game.
“Kamari had his best scoring output of his career. I think it speaks volumes to his character and how much he means to this team. He impacts the game on both sides of the floor and, in my mind, is one of the top performers in the conference, if not the best,” said head coach Darrell Glenn.
