Lauren Rainford and Jonah Capriotti named UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for January 29–February 5, 2024, are Lauren Rainford (women’s basketball) and Jonah Capriotti (men’s hockey).
Rainford is an education student from Toronto, Ontario. She filled the stat sheet in the Panthers’ February 3 win over the Dalhousie University Tigers. The fourth-year guard scored a game-high 20 points with seven rebounds, five assists, four blocks, and two steals.
“Lauren finished the game strong against Dalhousie in a much-needed win for the Panthers,” said head coach Matt Gamblin. “Her defensive intensity helped fuel some offense on the other end and set the tone in the second half. She had several blocks, steals, and rebounds to go with her game-high 20 points.”
Capriotti is a fifth-year science student from Charlottetown, PEI. He was exceptional in the net against the Saint Mary's Huskies on February 2 when the veteran goaltender turned aside 35 shots in a 3-2 win.
“Jonah had a great game on the road against SMU on Friday night,” said head coach Forbes MacPherson. “We were outplayed early in the game, but Jonah was solid and gave us a chance to fight back. He made some big saves late in the game and was key in helping us secure a big win.”
