Alaere Peterside and Men’s Track and Field relay team named UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for February 19–25, 2024, are Alaere Peterside (women’s track and field) and Colin Blanchard, Sidiki Diakite, Owen Headley, and John David (men’s track and field relay team).
Peterside is a first-year science student from Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She captured a gold medal in the high jump at the AUS Track and Field Championships this past weekend at the Université de Moncton, surpassing the competition by clearing a height of 1.65m. The participant closest to Peterside’s mark jumped 1.59m.
“At the AUS championships, Alaere found her early season form again, clearing heights by a wide margin,” said head coach Colin MacAdam. “She finished at a height of 1.65m to claim gold and cap off a successful season.”
Blanchard, Diakite, Headley, and David secured a bronze medal in the 4x200m relay at the AUS championships on February 24. The Panthers crossed the finish line in 1:37:37.
“The men’s relay team had another successful season, capturing bronze for the second time in two years. We’re incredibly proud of the work they put in, and we’re glad they were rewarded for their effort,” said MacAdam, also head coach of men’s track and field.
