The University of Prince Edward Island congratulates President Emeritus H. Wade MacLauchlan on being installed as chancellor of the University of New Brunswick.

UPEI’s former president was installed as chancellor on October 19, 2023, during UNB Fredericton’s 69th fall graduation ceremony.

“On behalf of UPEI, I congratulate President Emeritus MacLauchlan on being named to this prestigious post at UNB,” said Dr. Greg Keefe, interim president and vice-chancellor of UPEI, who attended the installation ceremony. “He led UPEI through a period of remarkable growth that we continue to build on today. He brings extensive experience in academia, politics and law, administration, and relationship building to his new role at UNB—his alma mater.”

MacLauchlan served as president and vice-chancellor of UPEI from 1999 to 2011, during which time he led the expansion of the University’s academic and research programming, enrolment, infrastructure, and philanthropic support. He was named president emeritus in 2012 and a founder of the University in 2015. He was named to the Order of Canada in 2008 and the Order of Prince Edward Island in 2014.

In recognition of his many contributions to the University and the community, UPEI established the H. Wade MacLauchlan Raised Expectations Awards for grade 12 students who demonstrate the greatest academic improvement during their grade 10 to 12 school years and go on to study at UPEI. In 2011 the MacLauchlan family established the MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing at UPEI to honour his contributions to the University and his 12 years of service as president and vice-chancellor.

After his tenure as president and vice-chancellor ended, he entered provincial politics, serving as premier of PEI from 2015 to 2019.

Congratulations, Chancellor MacLauchlan!
