Katie Richard and Kamari Scott named UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for October 23–29 are Katie Richard (women’s cross country) and Kamari Scott (men’s basketball).
Richard is a third-year science student from Charlottetown, PEI. For the second consecutive season, she was named a second team all-star after a strong run at the AUS Cross Country Championships on October 28 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She finished the eight-kilometre run in ninth place with a time of 32:08.
“Katie’s result this weekend is the result of some extremely hard work and resilience. To go from two weeks in a walking boot to a top-ten result and an AUS all-star in just four weeks took a lot of effort and mental toughness,” said head coach Mike Peterson. “I am so proud of how hard Katie works and how she leads by example at every workout. Now that she is healthy, I am excited to see how well she runs at the U SPORTS event on November 12.”
UPEI men’s basketball guard, Kamari Scott, from Malton, Ontario, is a fourth-year business student. In two games against the Memorial University Sea-Hawks, Scott averaged 21.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while shooting an efficient 51.5 per cent. The Panthers lost the first game on October 27 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, but they came back with a win the following night.
“Kamari is continuing to produce on both sides of the ball,” said head coach Darrell Glenn. “He showed he can be a great three-level scorer, as he put up 43 points over the weekend.”
