Congratulations to UPEI Field Hockey, Atlantic University champions!
The UPEI Field Hockey team nabbed their second Atlantic University Field Hockey League championship title in a row on October 29, defeating the Dalhousie Tigers 1-0 on the Panthers’ home turf. Jessica Watts, from Hampshire, PEI, who is in her fifth and final year of eligibility, scored the only goal in the final game.
In an interview with The Guardian, head coach Lacey MacLauchlan said the win was a team effort, and the clincher was the squad’s ability to roll the lines well. “One of our goals was keeping possession and not giving the ball away,” said MacLauchlan. “We did that really well. Another piece of it was supporting each other, being first to every ball. The team that wanted it the most was going to win.”
The Panthers finished in first place in regular season play, with a 10-2 record, earning them a quarter-final bye in the championship. UPEI advanced to the final with a 3-0 win over Acadia in the semi-final game, during which Sarah Peters, Maria McLane, and Kayla Batchilder scored for UPEI.
UPEI team members include goalie Dakota Patterson, Sarah Peters, Jessica Watts, Charlotte Thompson, Erica Penwell, Jenaya Ross, Ella Hennessey, Ashlyn Kelly, Kali Smith, Kayla Batchilder, Julie Hall, Maria McLane, Taylor Mitton, Livi Lawlor, Grace Forsythe, Hannah Lawlor, Ella MacDougall, Ella MacPherson, Lindsey Doiron, and Reilly Sullivan. Lacey MacLauchlan and Sidney Stavert form the coaching staff.
Congratulations!
