The following message was also issued by email to faculty, staff, and students on behalf of UPEI's Emergency Preparedness and Response team.

The University of Prince Edward Island takes the safety and security of its students, faculty, staff, and the entire campus community very seriously. As part of UPEI’s commitment to emergency preparedness and response, the University has a safety application called UPEI SAFE.

UPEI SAFE is the University’s safety app and emergency mass notification system (EMNS), which helps UPEI advise the campus community about university/storm closures and emergencies, as well as other safety-related notifications.

Other safety features found in UPEI SAFE include Mobile BlueLight, Friend Walk, and WorkAlone. Resources include Emergency Contacts, Safety Toolbox, Campus/Parking Maps, contact information for a variety of campus support services, and a mechanism to report issues to UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment, Security Services or to Facilities Management.

While student, faculty, and staff UPEI emails are automatically entered into UPEI SAFE, everyone is encouraged to download the app from the App Store (for iOS devices) or Google Play (for Android devices) to receive push notifications and texts (SMS).

Notifications about emergency situations and university/storm closures are pushed through UPEI SAFE and will be emailed to student, faculty, and staff @upei.ca email addresses. Messages are also posted on the UPEI home page (upei.ca), the UPEI Campus Screen network, and Twitter (@UPEI). Emergency notifications can also be broadcast in UPEI buildings through a public address system. UPEI SAFE users can also subscribe to receive notifications by text (SMS) or through the text-to-voice feature.
