The UPEI men’s and women’s basketball teams are ready to roll at the annual Mickey Place Memorial Basketball Tournament! The tournament features nine teams from across Canada and runs Friday, September 29, through Sunday, October 1.

The women’s pool includes Acadia University, University of Saskatchewan, University of Waterloo, and UPEI. The men’s pool includes Dalhousie University, York University, Saint Mary’s University, Holland College, and UPEI.

The tournament is named after John Thomas “Mickey” Place, a long-time friend of Panther Sport, a former UPEI Student Union employee, and a UPEI honorary degree recipient.

“U SPORTS Basketball fans will not want to miss this weekend’s Mickey Place Tournament,” said Darrell Glenn, coach of the UPEI Men’s Basketball team. “Some of the top players from men’s and women’s teams across the country will compete in our gym, and that’s an opportunity that you don’t get every day.”

All games will be played in the UPEI Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. The full tournament schedule can be found at gopanthersgo.ca. Tickets are $20 for a day pass, $10 for non-UPEI students, and free for UPEI students. An adult tournament pass is $50, $20 for non-UPEI students (season ticket holders get 50% off on the tournament pass). Tickets can be purchased online at panthertickets.ca or in person at game time.

In other Panther action this weekend, the UPEI women's and men's soccer teams play in Sydney against the Cape Breton Capers on Friday, September 29, and in Antigonish on September 30 when they take on the St. Francis Xavier squads.

The UPEI Men's Hockey team will face Acadia in Wolfville on Friday, September 29 and Dalhousie in Halifax on Saturday, September 30 in pre-season play. Also in pre-season action, the UPEI Women's Hockey team will take on Université de Moncton in Memramcook, NB on Saturday, September 30 and will return home to host Mount Allison at home on Sunday, October 1 at 12:00 pm at MacLauchlan Arena.

The UPEI Women's Rugby Panthers will square off against the Saint Mary Huskies on MacAdam Field on Sunday afternoon, October 1, at 2:00 pm.
