Dr. Miles Turnbull appointed Dean of Education at UPEI
Dr. Miles Turnbull has been appointed as the Dean of Education for a five-year term, effective July 1, 2023.
Dr. Turnbull is a professor of education, and recently Vice-Principal, Academic and Research, at Bishop’s University. He was previously dean and interim dean of education at UPEI from 2011–2013. His research interests include French as a Second Language teacher preparation. He has made significant research contributions to teaching practices, decisions about language use, and the experiences of minority Francophone populations.
Advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion, Dr. Turnbull has worked with teachers to equip them to be ready to embrace gender diversity and sexual representation in the classroom. He has overseen Bishop’s EDI plan for the Canada Research Chair program. He previously secured funding from the provincial government to support Indigenous initiatives, including a recent initiative that transformed a former divinity school space into an Indigenous student centre.
Dr. Turnbull was named Canadian Parents for French Educator of the Year for PEI in 2013 and received the Prix Robert Roy national award for outstanding contributions in Second Language Education from the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers in 2012. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in French, from UPEI; a Master of Arts from McMaster University; and a PhD in Second Language Education from the University of Toronto.
