The following message was also issued to students, staff, and faculty by email on June 30, 2023.

Dear Members of the University Community,

We were shocked to learn about the horrific stabbing attack that took place at the University of Waterloo on Wednesday afternoon, June 28.

We stand in solidarity with universities across the country in condemning all gendered and racialized violence, among others, that is on the rise all around us.

The kind of issues highlighted in the recent Rubin Thomlinson report, as we know, are not only here at UPEI. We are deeply concerned about reports that this attack was motivated by hatred toward those teaching and studying in the field of gender studies, and we affirm the importance of academic fields such as these as an integral part of postsecondary education.

On behalf of UPEI, we extend our support to the professor and two students who were injured, to the other students in the class who are also affected by this, and to the entire University of Waterloo community.

Sincerely,
