McKinley Nelson and Cameron Brown named UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for January 31–February 5 are McKinley Nelson (women’s hockey) and Cameron Brown (men’s basketball).
Nelson, an arts student from Calgary, Alberta, is on a scoring tear with six goals in the last five games. This weekend, the sophomore forward deposited a goal in a 5-0 win over Mount Allison University and followed that up with two more in a 4-3 overtime loss to Saint Mary’s University.
“McKinley had another great weekend,” said head coach Sean Fisher. “She was a threat to score each time she was on the ice, and even though other teams are trying really hard to shut her down, she continues to find a way to produce.”
Brown had a breakout weekend and emerged as a star in the making. The rookie forward wowed fans with his highlight-reel dunks and blocks and was a key contributor in the Panthers’ two wins this weekend. Brown, an arts student from Scarborough, Ontario, averaged 12.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks in wins against the Dalhousie University Tigers and Saint Mary's University Huskies.
“Cameron continues to impact the game on both sides of the ball with his raw athleticism. In 60 minutes of play this weekend, he contributed 24 points, 16 rebounds, and eight blocks,” said head coach Darrell Glenn.
