Aiden Rainford and Zach Wilson named UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for February 21–26 are Aiden Rainford (women’s basketball) and Zach Wilson (track and field).
Rainford, a psychology student from Toronto, Ontario, was named an AUS Championship Tournament all-star after two solid games in Halifax, Nova Scotia. During these games, the fourth-year forward averaged 13.0 points and 10.0 rebounds.
“Aiden had a very strong weekend in her first AUS playoffs, averaging a double-double, taking charges, and making a real impact,” said head coach Matt Gamblin. “She has shown in the second half of the season she can be a force in this league.”
Wilson had two great races over the weekend at the AUS Track and Field Championships on the University of New Brunswick campus in Saint John, New Brunswick, earning medals in both. In the 60-metre dash, the third-year sprinter from Cornwall, PEI, captured silver after posting a time of 6.99, just 3/100 of a second behind the gold medalist. Wilson also earned a bronze medal as part of UPEI’s 4x200-metre relay team. The Panthers clocked in at 1.35.04.
“Zach is a true leader in our UPEI track and field program as he plays the roles of team captain, star athlete, and assistant coach,” said head coach Colin MacAdam. “He had a great weekend leading our men’s 4x200m relay team to a bronze medal before getting a silver medal in the 60m.”
