Dr. Nebojsa Kujundzic delivered opening keynote lecture at annual international conference in Malta
Dr. Nebojsa Kujundzic, professor of philosophy at the University of Prince Edward Island and affiliate professor at the University of Malta, delivered an opening keynote lecture and chaired two sessions at a conference in Valletta, Malta, on November 17.
“Engaging the Contemporary (EtC) 2022” was the seventh edition of a series of an annual international conference organized by the Department of Philosophy of the University of Malta.
This year's theme, “Confronting Ethics,” sought to examine and bring into discussion recent engagements with the history of ethics as well as present-day ethical theories and practices as confronted by contemporary philosophers. The aim of the conference was to bring together various philosophical traditions into a conversation that furthers understanding of the ethical perplexities that trouble contemporary times.
“Since the 2022 conference explored new approaches to ethics, my goal was to set the conference tone in light of the hitherto neglected sense in philosophy: touch,” said Dr. Kujundzic. I ended my lecture by referring to what paying close attention to touch, if it is used in a mindful and ethical manner, could contribute to humanity: connectedness, presentness, empathy, respect, and, ultimately, care for our fellow human beings and indeed for the whole planet.”
The EtC conference seeks to promote an interdisciplinary approach to a variety of current debates, valorizing the coming together of academics and graduate students to present rigorous papers about topics they are researching. EtC has hosted several prominent as well as up-and-coming scholars from all over the globe, promoting a professional and friendly approach, emphasizing the role of engagement and on-going discussion about philosophical issues pertaining to contemporary times.
