Orianna MacNeil and Elijah Miller named UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for November 1–6 are Orianna MacNeil (women’s hockey) and Elijah Miller (men’s basketball).
MacNeil, a first-year kinesiology student from Mabou, Nova Scotia, is enjoying a strong start to her AUS career and leads all Panther defenders with two goals, and a plus/minus rating of +1. The rookie defender possesses an amazing shot that was on full display this weekend as she scored her second goal of the season against Dalhousie and assisted on the other UPEI goal in the Panthers’ 3-2 overtime loss.
“Ori is really starting to come into her own. She has great puck skills and is starting to learn what is going to work for her at the AUS and U SPORTS level,” said head coach Sean Fisher. “What I like most about Ori is her team spirit. She is genuinely so excited to be part of the program. She’s excited to be part of the group, and her energy is infectious for both athletes and staff.”
UPEI men’s basketball guard, Elijah Miller of Rexdale, Ontario, was in all-Canadian form in a weekend sweep of the Acadia Axemen. The third-year floor general averaged 24.5 points on 50 per cent shooting (45.5 per cent from three) to go along with 4.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game.
“Elijah was exceptional for us this weekend. He continues to impact the game and our team in a variety of ways which really sets us up for success," said head coach Darrell Glenn.
