One of the leading thinkers in global citizenship education has published a new book that shares decades of teaching experience. Dr. Linyuan Guo-Brennan, a professor at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), is the author of Education for Global Citizenship and Sustainability: From Theory to Practice. This resource is an excellent guide for new and existing teachers looking to incorporate global citizenship themes into their classrooms.

In the book, Guo-Brennan aims to empower educators to translate education for global citizenship and sustainable development into teaching and leadership actions at K–20 levels. Themes such as sustainable development goals, human and children’s rights, social justice, image and perception, conflict resolution, and digital citizenship skills are discussed at length, and each chapter offers activities and recommended resources.

By incorporating global citizenship education (GCED) into the 21st-century classroom, learners of all ages can understand the issues impacting local and global contexts and become active promoters of more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable communities. Rather than see GCED as another subject to be taught, Guo-Brennan demonstrates how it can be infused or integrated into existing subjects.

Published by Island Studies Press, the book was supported by a SSHRC Exchange Publication Award from the UPEI Vice-President of Academic and Research. It is available at The Bookmark, the UPEI Bookstore, and online at nimbus.ca

Guo-Brennan is a professor of international and global education in the UPEI Faculty of Education. She has been engaged in empowering globally competent citizens, educators, and leaders for three decades and was recognized as one of 100 Lead Global Thinkers on Education for Global Citizenship by the Global Citizenship Foundation.
