UPEI’s Chief Information Officer Dana Sanderson updated the University community on the UPEI Network Modernization Project in messages to students, faculty, and staff this October, which is Cybersecurity Month.

The project, which began in September 2019, stemmed from an increasing demand on the University’s network combined with increasing complexity and cybersecurity requirements in the areas of teaching, research, and operations.

“Once complete, the campus will be equipped with enhanced capabilities that are essential to the success of all UPEI network users,” said Sanderson. “With an upgraded network, we will have reliable and consistent access anywhere on campus and seamless Wi-Fi connections for students, faculty, and staff. These enhancements will ensure stronger device and information protection.”

Much progress has been made to date, including upgraded Wi-Fi service in 17 buildings across campus and an increase in Wi-Fi access points from 197 to 628. Data-throughput speeds (the amount of data moved successfully from one place to another in a given time period) have also improved significantly. Over 5,000 connections were made daily in the first week of the Fall academic semester, which is double the maximum capability of the previous Wi-Fi network.

In addition to Wi-Fi, a wired network has been enabled in the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation and another at AVC is 95 per cent complete. The goal is to upgrade more wired networks in additional buildings as part of this project.

The upgrades are being managed and carried out by the University’s network team. The UPEI Facilities Management team has also been key to the initiative, assisting with the modernization of the physical infrastructure locations.
