UPEI extends condolences on the passing of Hon. Doris M. Anderson
The University of Prince Edward Island community is saddened to learn of the passing of the Honourable Doris Margaret Anderson, CM, of St. Peter’s Bay, PEI, aged 100 years.
Dr. Anderson attended Prince of Wales College and graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1944 and from Cornell University with a Master of Science degree in 1951. She founded the home economics program at UPEI where she was a professor from 1969 until 1988. In 1994, she was named professor emerita, and in 2009, was honoured with a Distinguished Alumni Award.
Dr. Anderson was a founding member of the PEI chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1982 in recognition of her expertise in celiac disease and her contribution to education and mental health in PEI. She was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 1995, serving until 1997. She was conferred an honorary Doctor of Science by Acadia University in 1997.
The funeral service for Dr. Anderson will take place on Friday, October 21, at 2:00 pm in St. Peter’s United Church, St. Peter’s Bay. Visiting hours will take place at the MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel today from 3:00–6:00 pm and on Friday at St. Peter’s United Church from 12:30 pm until the time of service. Memorial donations may be made directly to St. Peter’s United Church, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation, or the UPEI Scholarship Fund.
The University community extends condolences to Dr. Anderson’s family, colleagues, friends, and former students. The flags on campus have been lowered to half-mast in her memory.
