UPEI Student Leads Charlottetown Terry Fox Run
The 42nd annual Terry Fox Run will take place on Sunday, September 18, across Canada. The event will once again be held in person, uniting neighbourhoods and schools as they participate in the 2022 Terry Fox Run.
This year’s Charlottetown Terry Fox Run will take place at the University of Prince Edward Island Alumni Canada Games Place track. Reilly Sullivan, a fourth-year biology student and a member of the Panthers women’s basketball team, is organizing this year’s event.
“The Terry Fox Run is an amazing cause as it raises critical funds for cancer research and unites communities across Canada. My involvement with the Terry Fox Foundation started when I was 12 years old, primarily through my dad’s involvement as organizer of the Saint John Terry Fox Run from 2013–2018,” said Sullivan. “When I think of Terry Fox, I am reminded of fond memories with friends and family. My goal as the Charlottetown Terry Fox Run organizer this year is to create the same impressionable memories for everyone who is a part of this event.”
Two categories of runs to be offered: a “Kid’s Run,” which will include both a 400m and a 1km run, and a “Big Run” for adults, consisting of a 5km and 10km route. The event will kick off at 8 am with registration for the Kid’s Run followed by the run at 8:30 am. Registration for the Big Run will begin at 9 am with the run at 10 am. Registration and the start and finish lines will be at the UPEI track. Participants are encouraged to register online and fundraise using the Terry Fox Foundation’s website: https://run.terryfox.ca/3457.
Everyone is welcome to participate in this classic Canadian tradition. There are no barriers to join and fundraise; participants can walk, run, rollerblade, or use a wheelchair. For the past few years, the Terry Fox Run has taken place virtually, with participants encouraged to complete their challenge independently due to COVID-19. Now that the run is back in person, participation is at an all-time high with approximately 4 million Canadians expected to participate either with their local community or at school.
“By hosting the run on campus this year, my hope is that it excites Charlottetown and encourages everyone, especially students, faculty, and UPEI supporters and alumni, to come out and help continue Terry’s legacy,” said Sullivan.
