In consultation with the PEI Emergency Measures Organization, UPEI will remain closed until Monday, October 3, due to continued safety concerns, power outages, and other disruptions caused by tropical storm Fiona. Eighty per cent of Islanders remain without power.

The University of Prince Edward Island is very fortunate that it has not sustained significant structural damage due to tropical storm Fiona and power has been restored to the Charlottetown campus. UPEI appreciates the efforts of the many employees who have been working diligently to support the campus community through this difficult time, especially when they are personally facing hardship at home.

All classes, labs, and on-campus events are cancelled during this time period. Cancelled events include but are not limited to: UPEI Panther Sport home games; Truth and Reconciliation gathering on Wednesday, September 28; Mickey Place Tournament; UPEI Field Hockey tournament; Donor Picnic, Homecoming Weekend, and AVC Open House.

The UPEI Student Union will be sponsoring a hot soup lunch for students, from 11:30 am–1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 28, at the UPEI Chaplaincy Centre.

Please note:

  • UPEI Security Services and UPEI Facilities Management are in full operation.
  • Services for students in residence continue to operate.
  • In addition to serving students with meal plans, the Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall is open to students who wish to purchase meals.
  • AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital will remain open for emergencies. AVC Diagnostic Services will continue to provide essential animal health support.
  • Robertson Library will remain closed.

Several UPEI buildings are open for off-campus students as warming/charging centres:

  • W.A. Murphy Student Centre will be open from 8 am–6 pm
  • UPEI Chaplaincy Centre will be open from 8 am–5 pm
  • UPEI Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre will be open from 8 am–6 pm (second floor lobby only-fitness centre and gymnasium will be closed)

We recognize how this situation is stressful. Please remember that UPEI has a number of supports for students through UPEI Student Affairs, including personal counselling (studentserv@upei.ca), Accessibility Services (studentserv@upei.ca), and the International Student Office (irostu@upei.ca). Eligible employees can access the Employee Assistance Program at 1-800-387-4765. We encourage you to reach out for support.
