Dr. Laurie Brinklow and Dr. Carla Di Giorgio, faculty members at the University of Prince Edward Island, have been awarded SSHRC Exchange Publication Awards.

Two $5,000 SSHRC Exchange Publication Awards are given out annually by UPEI to support the publication of manuscripts written or edited by faculty in the social sciences and humanities.

Brinklow is an assistant professor in Island Studies. Along with Andrew Jennings of the University of the Highlands and Islands in Shetland, Scotland, she is the co-editor of The Bridge Effect: Critical Reflections in the Age of Technological Solutionism. This volume consists of 14 chapters featuring bridged islands―both physical and metaphorical―from around the globe. The authors explore if and how “islandness” or island life has changed on these small islands—from economic effects resulting from a link to how islanders feel about themselves once they have been joined to a mainland or another island.

Dr. Carla Di Giorgio is an instructor in sociology, island studies, and inquiry studies at UPEI. Her manuscript, Inclusive Education: A Global Perspective, aims to provide scholars, lay people, and students with a concise overview of the policies, practices, and gaps in inclusive education around the globe. The book provides an overview of each region’s policies and practices for providing diverse populations with equitable access to education while taking into consideration the politics, history, social conditions, and economics of each region.

Island Studies Press congratulates the award recipients and thanks UPEI for supporting faculty publications. Both books will be published by Island Studies Press.
