Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for September 5–11 are Emily Duffy (women’s rugby) and Salem Farag (men’s soccer).

In the home opener on Saturday, September 10, the UPEI Women’s Rugby Panthers defeated the St. FX X-Women 32-5. Third-year player, Emily Duffy, from Saint John, NB, was an integral player in the game with her speed, strength, and determination. Duffy overpowered the St. FX defence, resulting in a game-high two tries.

Nine minutes into the second half, Duffy barrelled her way through the St. FX defence for a five-yard try, pushing the lead to 27-0. In the 66th minute, Duffy scored again after she took a pass and pushed her way 22 yards for her second try of the contest.

“Emily had an extremely strong match on the attacking side of the ball,” said head coach James Voye. “She wreaked havoc on the defence the entire game, showing her strength, power, and ability to break through St. FX.”

Due her standout performance, Duffy was elevated to Subway AUS Athlete of the Week status for September 5–11.

During an away game at Cape Breton University on Sunday, September 11, UPEI Men’s Soccer third-year wing Salem Farag of Charlottetown delivered the clutch goal in extra time to tie the game against the country's top-ranked team, the Cape Breton Capers. As a result, the Panthers earned a hard-fought point in the standings.

“Sal came off the bench and gave us a big lift against CBU with his extra-time goal, helping us to secure a point,” said head coach Lewis Page. “Sal built off that performance and was a constant threat with the ball against St. FX.”
