UPEI extends its condolences on the passing of SDU alumnus and UPEI coach Jack Kane
The UPEI Panther family and broader University community were saddened to learn of the passing of UPEI Sports Hall of Fame member John (Jack) Kane on July 3, 2022.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017, along with other Saint Dunstan’s University (SDU) hockey icons including his father, Jack Kane Sr. (posthumously), Billy MacMillan, and Vince Mulligan, Jack Kane Jr. was an avid and gifted athlete who loved his family, friends, and those he coached, taught, and worked with.
Jack’s name is, as is his father's, synonymous with several sports, all of which he played at a high level: hockey, football, track and field, basketball, baseball, and, of course, golf.
He excelled in both hockey and football while a student at SDU and later went on to coach the SDU/UPEI Men's Hockey team from 1964–72 and 1974–76. Eighteen years after his father coached the team to its first Maritime conference title, Jack took the Saints on a journey that included a 10-1 season record, the Maritime championship, and runner-up status at the national championship. The only loss in league play for the 1965 squad was to St. Thomas University on the final weekend of the regular season. Hockey PEI recognized him with a life membership in 2007 for his contributions to hockey in the province.
In addition to coaching at SDU/UPEI, Jack worked as an educator in the public school system, a public servant with the provincial government, CEO for the Host Society of the 1991 Canada Winter Games held on PEI, and manager of Brookvale Ski Park and the Island’s provincial golf courses.
The University extends sincere condolences to Jack’s family, friends, and former colleagues. To read his obituary, click here.
