Lauren Rainford and Isaiah Ankra named UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and dedication to their respective sports. This week’s UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for March 7–13 are Lauren Rainford (women’s basketball) and Isaiah Ankra (men’s basketball).
Rainford continued her all-star level play, guiding the Panthers to a 1-1 weekend against the Memorial Sea-Hawks in St. John’s, NL. The second-year guard averaged 22 points on 50 per cent shooting, including a 30-point effort Saturday night. She also averaged 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals in the two games.
“Lauren continued her growth this past weekend as we round into playoffs,” said head coach Matt Gamblin. “We are totally focused on the task at hand this coming weekend and Lauren will continue to be a huge part of our success at both ends of the floor.”
Ankra's solid play continued this past weekend at Memorial where he averaged 12.5 points and connected on 4-of-9 three-pointers in two games. The rookie guard also showed some physicality inside as he averaged 6.0 rebounds.
“Isaiah had another strong weekend for us,” said head coach Darrell Glenn. “He continues to come off the bench and provide our team with defensive energy and scoring.”
