Sasha Weekes and Elijah Miller named Panther Subway Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and dedication to their respective sports. This week’s UPEI Panther Subway Athletes from February 14 to 20 are Sasha Weekes (women’s hockey) and Elijah Miller (men’s basketball).
Weekes is a second-year business major from Hunter River, Prince Edward Island, and a goaltender on the UPEI Women’s Hockey team. The Panthers defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 2-0 on the back of Weekes who recorded 31 saves for her first AUS shutout.
“Sasha had a very strong weekend stopping all 10 shots she faced in the third period at St. FX. She then followed that up with 31 saves in a 2-0 win over Dalhousie,” said head coach Bruce Donaldson. “After a lengthy layoff due to COVID-19, we weren’t in peak form, but Sasha was at her best in securing the win. She tracked the puck well and never stopped competing. It was great watching such a strong effort.”
Miller is a second-year business major from Rexdale, Ontario, and a point guard on the UPEI Men’s Basketball team. Miller had a hand in 57 points in an impressive 91-79 win over UNB. The sophomore point guard scored 24 points and had a career-high/program record of 15 assists, which led to 33 points. He also tied his own program record of seven steals. He reached that mark during a game against Cape Breton on November 13, 2021.
“Elijah continues to grow as an offensive player, and he makes the games easier for his teammates with his ability to facilitate and score,” said head coach Darrell Glenn.
