The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island, hosted its annual Fall Awards and Recognition night on Tuesday, October 26, at the College.

This event recognizes students and faculty who have excelled academically and/or have made significant impacts in their communities—AVC, UPEI, Charlottetown, or surrounding areas. Traditionally, this event provides an opportunity for donors to meet their award recipients and present them with their award. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, donors were unable to attend in person but were able to join the festivities via Facebook Live.

“We are incredibly grateful for our donors’ commitment to higher education and their overall recognition of the contribution that veterinary medicine makes in our region and society as a whole,” said Dr. Greg Keefe, dean (currently interim president of UPEI). “Our donors make a huge difference in our students’ lives. We truly appreciate all they do.”

Approximately $210,000 in scholarships and awards were presented to 65 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students and four graduate students for a total of 88 awards. Dr. Anne Marie Carey, associate dean of academic and student affairs and lecturer, AVC, was the recipient of the Zoetis Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teacher Award, and Dr. Stephanie Landry, lecturer, Department of Companion Animals, received the Students of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Teacher of the Year Award.

The AVC was unable to host its Fall Awards and Recognition night in 2020 due to the global pandemic so the faculty was excited to resume this important tradition.
