UPEI welcomes Julie Pellissier-Lush as new Mawi’omi Student Centre coordinator
UPEI Student Affairs is excited to announce that Julie Pellissier-Lush has accepted the position of coordinator for the Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre on the UPEI campus. She will be working part-time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
An author, actor, engaged community member, educator of Mi’kmaq culture and heritage, and PEI’s Poet Laureate, Pellissier-Lush brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position, which provides academic and personal advising and support to the Indigenous student community.
Anne Bartlett, acting director of Student Affairs, said, “We look forward to having Julie share her passion and expertise with us here at UPEI. While she is no stranger to the campus, please join me in welcoming Julie to this role.”
Working closely with UPEI's Elder-in-Residence, Dr. Judy Clark, Pellissier-Lush will be key in enhancing the Indigenous student experience while raising awareness of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and history for the entire campus.
“It is a privilege and honour for me to be here and help our wonderful UPEI students to plan, to dream and to succeed on this educational path they have chosen,” said Pellissier-Lush. “I hope to see everyone soon in our safe and welcoming Mawi'omi Centre located in Dalton Hall!”
Pjila’si, Julie!
About the Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre
Mawi’omi is the Mi’kmaq word for “gathering place” and the Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre offers a place for students to gather, socialize, study, and relax. The Centre also assists current and incoming Indigenous students with admission and course selection, provides access to other student services, and offers support, cultural growth, and teachings from the Elder-in-Residence. It is a home away from home for all Indigenous students.
