UPEI athletes and events recognized at the 47th annual Sport PEI Amateur Sport Awards
UPEI was well represented in the list of winners at the 47th annual Sport PEI Amateur Sport Awards ceremony. The annual event was held Thursday night at the Confederation Centre of the Arts’ Homburg Theatre.
UPEI’s Women’s Basketball team was named the CBC PEI Team of the Year. The Panthers had a historic season in 2019–2020, winning the AUS title and taking home bronze at the U SPORTS national championships.
Jenna Mae Ellsworth was named the Synergy Fitness and Nutrition Intercollegiate Female Athlete of the Year. On a team of stars, Ellsworth shone. She was also named the AUS Female Athlete of the Year and the U SPORTS Female Basketball Player of the Year.
The 2020 U SPORTS women’s hockey championship, hosted by UPEI, was named the SCORE! Event of the Year. The 2019 event, also hosted by UPEI, broke attendance records for the U SPORTS women’s hockey championship, and the 2020 edition looked to do it again but was cut short due to COVID-19.
“We are very proud of our Panther student-athletes as well as the organizers and volunteers of the U SPORTS women’s hockey championship,” said Jane Vessey, director of Athletics and Recreation at UPEI. “It is extremely rewarding to see their success recognized by Sport PEI, and I congratulate all of them for their resiliency in what has been a challenging year for sport, and for their continued dedication to achieving their goals.”
