MBA in Global Leadership student gives back
A student in UPEI’s MBA in Global Leadership program has provided more than 2,000 ration kits to families in Delhi, India. Sidharth Dhar’s project to “give back” to his community is inspired in part by the service learning leadership experience, which is part of the global leadership and ethics course in the MBA program.
This assignment promotes students’ development of leadership skills and social responsibility through civic engagement. By taking responsibility in a voluntary role, students have a chance to help a not-for-profit (or similar) organization while practicing leadership, or they may choose to organize and execute a community-oriented project or event. During the course, each student is expected to spend 10–20 hours gaining experience.
In the midst of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, Dhar who is from India along with some of his employees, voluntarily initiated the purchase, assembly, and distribution of ration kits to support people in the less privileged areas of his home city of Delhi.
In total, they delivered more than 1,500 dry ration kits and 500 energy-packed food ration kits from September to November 2020.
Dhar is an active community volunteer and came up with this idea as a way of giving back to his community during a challenging time. COVID-19 restrictions have been in place in Delhi since March 2020, which has had a huge impact on the city. He wanted this initiative to provide a renewed sense of hope for those in hard-hit areas.
