Dr. Brian Wagner, a professor in the UPEI Department of Chemistry, has authored a textbook exploring the chemical and physiochemical principles of supramolecular host-guest chemistry in solution. Host-Guest Chemistry is published by De Gruyter.

In the preface to Host-Guest Chemistry, Wagner writes:

“This book presents an entry-level introduction to the principles, practice, and applications of host-guest inclusion in solution. This interesting and highly useful phenomenon represents a simple type of supramolecular process, in which two or more molecules come together to form larger structures, held together only by intermolecular forces of attraction. In this specific process, a relatively small molecule, the ‘guest,’ enters and resides within the internal cavity of a larger, hollow ‘host’ molecule in solution, forming a supramolecular host-guest inclusion complex.”

“I want to congratulate Dr. Wagner on the publication of this textbook,” said Dr. Katherine Gottschall-Pass, interim vice-president academic and research at UPEI. “This work provides a significant contribution to the study of host-guest chemistry and will be valuable tool for researchers exploring this exciting area of science.”

Dr. Wagner’s research expertise includes host-guest chemistry. This host-guest relationship often increases the fluorescence, or the ability to emit light, of the guests. Real-world applications include enhanced trace analysis of pesticides and the design of molecular sensors. His stunning photography from the lab (and elsewhere!) is enjoyed by thousands on social media. Follow him on Twitter and Instagram.
