High school students! Learn public speaking from broadcaster Bruce Rainnie
UPEI’s Applied Communications, Leadership, and Culture (ACLC) program is pleased to offer its second annual Public Speaking for High School students workshop with broadcaster and ACLC Journalist-in-Residence Bruce Rainnie. The one-day workshop is Saturday, March 14, from 10 am to 2 pm. Students must register to attend by March 7.
Being able to talk in an informative and entertaining way is a skill that never goes out of style, but one that has perhaps slipped in the advent of online communications. Rainnie will discuss whether presentations should be scripted or unscripted, and what the ideal length of presentation should be. He will also discuss
- how to structure a presentation for maximum impact;
- how to best connect with your audience;
- how to use your voice most effectively;
- how to use body language to your advantage;
- give practical tips and tricks for managing public speaking nerves.
The ACLC program at UPEI works to provide a safe and highly informative space to listen, discuss, and apply public speaking methods for all persons. Through this workshop, students of any background have an opportunity to improve confidence in their public speaking ability and to broaden their skillset.
Rainnie was the host of CBC's Compass, the supper-hour news program for Prince Edward Island. He is nationally known for being the current president and CEO of the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in Halifax, a regular host on Hockey Night in Canada, and a broadcaster of seven Olympic games.
This workshop is open to high school students only. The workshop is free, but students will be required to provide their own lunch. Register here by March 7.
