UPEI varsity teams are busy at home on the turf, ice, and basketball court this week. Here is your Panthers’ home schedule for September 18 to 22.

Wednesday

The UPEI women’s hockey team is preparing for another big season, including hosting the 2020 U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship. Coach Bruce Donaldson is watching his team come together Wednesday in an exhibition match against Mount Allison University. The puck drops tonight at 7in MacLauchlan Arena.

“We’re excited to hit the ice and get some true game action under our belt,” said Donaldson. “We will only be dressing nine forwards, as we have a full exhibition schedule, and this will give the coaching staff an opportunity to evaluate individual players and possible line combinations. Mount A always comes to play hard, so it’s a great test for our opening exhibition.”

Thursday

Thursday evening is a great opportunity to get a sneak peek at the 2019–2020 Panther men’s basketball team, as coach Darrell Glenn divides his squad in two for the annual Green & White game. Glenn is very excited about the upcoming season.

“This year's Panther team will look very different than last year’s group,” he said. “We have added depth and size to our front court, and our back court will feature more speed, athleticism, and toughness.”

Saturday & Sunday

The weekend belongs to the “beautiful game,” as the men and women’s soccer teams each host a pair of games on the UPEI Turf Field. On Saturday, the teams take on Memorial University. The women play at 1 pm, and the men at 3:15 pm. On Sunday, the Panthers host Université de Moncton at 1 pm and 3:15 pm.

“At this stage, we’ve got to take care of our fundamental basics,” said Glen Miller, coach of the UPEI women’s soccer team. “We need to up our energy and our decision-making skills and be willing to lay it all out there. It’s AUS ball: tough, physical, and smart. Winning is a choice, and there’s a very good chance of winning the game if you win the one-on-one battles.”

Lewis Page, coach of the men’s soccer team, is looking for some all-important wins at home early in the season.

“This weekend should be two fast and exciting games,” said Page. “Memorial is always a fiercely competitive team, and we have a long-standing rivalry with Moncton. UPEI men’s soccer will be looking to continue to make winning our home games a high priority.”
