UPEI Concert Series presents Kevin MacLean
On Friday, November 15 at 7:30 pm, saxophonist Kevin MacLean will perform as part of the UPEI Concert Series. 'Worldly Inspirations' will feature music from England, Japan, the United States, and Prince Edward Island. MacLean will collaborate with Frances McBurnie, Karem Simon, Branden Kelly, and perform a world premiere by composer Dr. Rick Covey.
MacLean has most recently been concerto soloist with the UPEI Wind Symphony and the PEI Symphony. Past performances include the World Association of Bands and Ensembles Conference, North American Saxophone Alliance Conference, and the National Music Festival. He is currently the saxophone instructor at UPEI.
The centrepiece of this recital will be the world premiere of Covey's 'The Moment When.' This large-scale solo work was commissioned by MacLean in the summer of 2013. MacLean has worked closely with Covey and is excited to premiere this exciting new addition to Canadian saxophone repertoire.
The inspiration behind this extensive solo work is the song cycle, common to musical theatre. Compositional choices were made based on theatrical considerations first, such as plot, imagery, and character development, resulting in a unique addition to the solo saxophone repertoire. This dramatic work is comprised of seven diverse movements, each connected with a brief pause signifying the sectional division. The result is an overall musical form that is both continuous and a series of short, individual movements that form a clear dramatic structure.
Tickets are available at the door ($15 adults/$10 seniors and students) or by contacting the UPEI Music Department at (902) 566-0507 or music@upei.ca.
