Dr. Tony Couture will give a talk titled “Anarchism Applied to Higher Education” as part of the Department of Philosophy Speaker Series.
Abstract: Anarchism is a paradoxical conception of government that has been widely misunderstood and conflated with intellectual terrorism. However, reasonable forms of anarchism applying to higher education can be found in Paul Goodman's The Community of Scholars (1962) and R.P. Wolff's The Ideal of the University (1969). John McMurtry's University Wars (2009) contrasts the truly free academy with the corporatized institution. By clarifying the primary values and development of radical philosophy, I show how anarchism applies to the design of liberal arts programs, leadership issues, autonomy and the integrity of vital teaching and learning processes. Anarchism provides a useful check on the unbalanced power of money and corporate power in university leadership and protects the pursuit of truth from overgrown authority.
