Hornsby has published extensively on the historical geography of northeastern North America and the Atlantic World. His book Surveyors of Empire: Samuel Holland, J.F.W. Des Barres, and the Making of The Atlantic Neptune has won three awards, including Publication of the Year Award from the Prince Edward Island Museum & Heritage Foundation in 2012, and the Pierre Savard Award from the International Council for Canadian Studies in 2013. The book examines the development of British military cartography in North America during and after the Seven Years War, as well as advancements in military and scientific equipment used in surveying. MacKinnon Auditorium in Don and Marion McDougall Hall at UPEI.
