Dr. Kathleen MacMillan, Ambulatory Equine Service, Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI, will give a community workshop about equine animal welfare on Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in Lecture Theatre A. She will present the guidelines for minimum standards of care for the welfare of the horse thus dispelling the truths and myths about what horses really need to sustain a happy and healthy life. This will include proper nutrition, appropriate shelter, disease prevention and treatment, humane handling, and when necessary, end of life decisions and humane euthanasia. There will also be a section on recognizing signs for concern, such as how to body condition score horses and what you as an individual can do if you suspect a hose is in distress and their welfare is at risk. Dr. MacMillan will introduce "The Five Freedoms", a core concept of animal welfare; by upholding these freedoms, an animal's primary welfare needs will be met. Everyone is welcome.
