For the second year, UPEI will host ONE BILLION RISING – a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls on Friday, February 14, 2014 at 12:15 pm. The campus community is invited to McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre to rise up and dance together to support the movement. Fitness instructor, Anna Lacroix, will lead the group in dancing.
One Billion Rising began in 2013 as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. One billion women and those who love them will walk out, dance, rise up, and demand an end to this violence. For inspiring videos from around the world, and more information, see www.onebillionrising.org.
Both the Advisory Council on the Status of Women and PEI Family Violence Prevention Services will be present as community representatives and supporters. Donations will be accepted in support of PEI Family Violence Prevention Services.
