Dr. Franklin Mendivil presentation "Sets of sums and sums of sets"
Posting Date(s)
The School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences invites the campus community to a presentation by Dr. Franklin Mendivil on Friday, February 26 at 2:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre B.
Given a list of numbers, what do you get when you look at the set of all possible sums of parts of the list? It turns out that many times you get a set with interesting fractal structure. In this talk delivered from Acadia University via the web, Dr. Mendivil, from Acadia's Department of Mathematics and Statistics, will discuss this idea and explore the geometric structure of the resulting set of sums. Generalizations to 2D (and higher) will also be discussed. This framework of “sumsets” is a nice method for constructing Cantor sets with lots of symmetries.
