“Five great aquaculture projects I have cancelled (and why)” How did a veterinary graduate from AVC end up as the chief scientist for a National Centre for Aquaculture and Biotechnology in New Zealand? What is the Centre mandate and what happens when you put a veterinarian in charge of group of dedicated researchers (and their research budgets)? This presentation will include a brief introduction to New Zealand’s National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research, how applied research is organized and supported in New Zealand and the challenge of balancing the interests and motivations of researchers (and their sense of entitlement) with the core purposes of the organization.
