Campus Notices

The UPEISU will be closed tomorrow, April 25, from 11:30 am-1:30 pm. Sorry for any inconvenience.
As a result of the 2013-14 submitted budget, Research Services anticipates that the UPEI internal research funding program will be placed on hiatus for the 2013-14 fiscal year. Until further notice, applications to the following research grants committee programs will not be accepted: · Bridge Funding Grant · Collaborative Research Grant · Discretionary Grant · Major Research Grant · New Scholars Grant · Travel Grant The following programs are outside the scope of Research Services' budget and will continue to be offered: · Self-funded/Sabbatical Program · Sessional Instructor Grant Fund · SSHRC Institutional Grant (however, intake deadlines may be altered depending on level of SSHRC funding for 2013-14) We recognize the value and importance of the internal funding program and anticipate that it will be reinstated in some capacity by 2014. In the interim, the suite of programs offered by the research grants committee will be reviewed by the committee and the VP Research, with a focus toward determining the most appropriate mechanisms for distributing funding in order to meet both the committee’s mandate and the needs of the campus community. A further notice will be circulated after the budget decision on May 9. Leslie Cudmore Research Grants Coordinator Research Services lcudmore@upei.ca 566-0709

The recent events surrounding the proposed changes to the University of Prince Edward Island’s Faculty of Arts have raised serious concerns both on and off campus. An email from Interim Dean of Arts, Nebojsa Kujundzic, was sent to his faculty proposing a plan of amalgamating the existing fifteen departments into four “clusters”. Unfortunately, this sparked concern and left more questions than answers. As the Student Union, we feel the need to remind all parties that each and every decision made on this campus affects our students. The challenge of balancing the budget has been a topic of conversation since the 3% cut to the operating grant from the province last year. From our perspective both as student representatives, and students ourselves, we know there has been ample opportunity in the past year for both preliminary discussion and consultation surrounding the future of the Faculty of Arts. Fragmented messaging from senior administration at UPEI, coupled with the response from faculty in the form of a very public call to action without all the necessary information, has created confusion and propagated misinformation among students. A discussion about the future of the Faculty of Arts could have been a very positive and healthy collaboration between students, faculty, and senior administration; however, our present circumstances do not reflect such a reality. We ask that all employees of the university, whether they be faculty members, support staff, or senior administration, remind themselves that every decision, every action, and every choice being made should contribute positively to the students of UPEI and the institution itself. We feel that there is still an opportunity to foster healthy, positive, and open debate about necessary and beneficial changes made to the Faculty of Arts and look forward to actively participating in these conversations. Further to last year's Employee Engagement Survey and subsequent discussion by the Healthy Campus Committee, the Healthy Campus Committee has recommended that sessions be offered on Creating and Maintaining a Respectful Workplace at UPEI. While the survey results were encouraging for the University, this was identified as an area where some training would be useful to further support efforts of the Committee to encourage a positive and engaging workplace environment. This is especially important in uncertain and challenging times when emotions can be more fragile. As such, Jan Link, former Fair Treatment advisor with UPEI will be facilitating several sessions over the coming months. These sessions will be divided into two streams, given the separate responsibilities that exist for managers/supervisors and employees. For more details on the sessions for all staff and faculty, please visit the Notices section at http://hr.upei.ca/ Thank you and we look forward to great sessions and the chance to spend some time learning together.
