Please be advised that parking permits for UPEI have sold out. The parking kiosk is now closed and any inquiries should be addressed to the Parking Office located at Security Services in the Central Utility Building. The 15th annual Recognition of Founders Ceremony will take place on Thursday, September 25 in the Quadrangle outside of SDU Main Building at 2:00 pm. A reception will take place immediately following the ceremony in Schurman Market Square, Don and Marion McDougall Hall (also ceremony's rain location). UPEI soccer will host UPEI alumni night on Friday, September 12. All UPEI alumni will be granted free admission to the soccer games; drink and food specials will be available at The Wave prior to, and after the games; and a licensed beer garden will be available during the games. Alumni in attendance will also be entered to win a Panther prize pack from the UPEI Alumni Office.
The evening kicks off with the women's Panthers facing Mount Allison at 5:00 pm, followed by the men's game at 7:15 pm. This will be a great chance for UPEI alumni to reconnect with former classmates and teammates, and cheer on this year's UPEI Panther student-athletes. Canadian journalist and author Gwynne Dyer will speak at UPEI on Monday, September 22 as part of his cross-Canada university and college tour. The event will take place in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, room 242 in Don and Marion McDougall Hall at 7:00 pm.
Sponsored by the UPEI Faculty of Arts, Dyer’s lecture is entitled "What the First World War Taught Us." Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
The Office of Skills Development and Learning is excited to welcome Dr. Terry Anderson of Athabasca University, former Canada Research Chair in Distance Education and co-author of the recent book, "Teaching crowds: Learning and social media," on Friday, October 10.

In July 2011, the family of Harry and Marjorie MacLauchlan of Stanhope, PEI made another leadership gift to UPEI to create a substantial program of awards to encourage and recognize student writing achievement. The gift is to honour H. Wade MacLauchlan’s twelve years of service as UPEI president and vice-chancellor, and to recognize the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning.
The MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing is the largest such student-oriented program in Canada! There are up to 57 prizes available for returning students who produced outstanding written work in the previous academic year (September 1 – August 31), as substantive role in their academic course work or for the broader community audience, and who showed most improvement through a writing support program coordinated through the Webster Centre. There are also up to three prizes available for faculty or staff, who have shown exceptional leadership in the development of writing among students at UPEI.

Cost to participants: $200, which includes four nights accommodation, meals and snacks

Nature PEI and the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI, will co-present a public workshop called “Tick Talk: The threat of Lyme disease in PEI” on Thursday, September 25, at 7:00 pm in the AVC Lecture Theatre A.
A serious illness that spreads to humans and pets from the bite of infected ticks, Lyme disease is on the rise in Canada. Dr. Vett Lloyd, Department of Biology, Mount Allison University, and Dr. Barb Horney, Department of Pathology and Microbiology, AVC, will talk about the symptoms of Lyme disease, how it is transmitted, treatments available, and prevention for you and your pets.
Everyone is welcome. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. For information, contact (902) 566-0589 or upei.ca/avc
The Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island will hold its 26th annual Open House on Saturday, September 27, from 10:00 am-2:00 pm.
Organized and run by AVC students, AVC Open House is an opportunity for the public to go behind the scenes at a veterinary medical college. Visitors will see many demonstrations and exhibits, including a parade of dog breeds; clicker training with dogs; a painted cow and horse; and much more. Children can bring their favourite stuffed toys for a check-up and treatment at the always-popular Teddy Bear Clinic. And they can have their faces painted, get balloon animals, and learn how to gown up for surgery.
Visitors are welcome to bring canned cat or dog food, or toys for the PEI Humane Society.
AVC Open House is one of the largest, most successful open houses in Atlantic Canada. Everyone is welcome to attend!

With the start of the fall semester, the demand for keys and card access increases greatly. We are doing our best to meet the demand, but we ask for your patience. We would like to ask for your assistance by doing the following:
Security will contact you when your key is available for pick up. If you have not been notified then your request has not yet been processed and we ask for your patience.
Key requests are processed on Tuesdays. Key requests must be received in security prior to 4:00 pm on Monday to be processed on Tuesday. If the request is late being sent to security it will be set aside for the next week’s key processing. Once you have received notification that your key is available we ask you to pick it up between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm Monday – Friday at the Security front desk.
If you obtain a new photo ID card and need your access levels updated, please send an email to security@upei.ca with your name, ID number, and the bar code from your ID, and we will process the request (This does not pertain to security access levels for the Atlantic Veterinary College). You do not need to present the card in person. Cards take 24 hours to be updated in the system.

The UPEI Department of Music is pleased to begin its 2014-15 Concert Series at Steel Recital Hall on Friday, September 12 at 7:30 pm with David Braid and the Maritime Brass Quintet performing Braid’s works for jazz piano and brass quintet and Gershwin's “Rhapsody in Blue.” Throughout this season, the Music Department will be celebrating its students, alumni, and PEI musicians returning home, by featuring them in fifteen of the seventeen concerts presented in the series. This first concert includes UPEI alumni Eric Mathis and Bob Nicholson as part of the brass quintet. Tickets are $15/$10 for students and seniors, and are available at the door or in advance by calling 566-0507 or by email at music@upei.ca.
Dr. David Jakeman, College of Pharmacy, Department of Chemistry, Dalhousie University will present a seminar this Wednesday, September 10 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Jakeman's presentation is entitled "Enzymes, Carbohydrates and Natural Products." The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre Room 212. All are welcome to attend!

The Environmental Sciences and Human Biology research seminars kicks off the year with its first seminar on Friday, September 12. The first speaker will be Dr. Yefang Jiang from Agriculture and Agri-food Canada (AAFC). Dr. Jiang's talk is entitled "Advancing knowledge for improving water quality and economic resiliency of crop production in Atlantic Canada."
