Dr. Mike Boyes has conducted research at the University of Calgary over the last five years with the students in his first year introductory courses (N = 3000 and counting). Specifically he has looked at the relationship between student identity development and identity style and student adjustment to the University environment. In addition he has examined the extent to which students are open to or reticent about accessing any of the wide array of services that are available to them at university. The key differentiator seems to be whether or not the students have successfully begun the process of forming sense of personal identity or, in effect, become engaged in themselves. Mike is particularly interested in discussing his findings with folks who work directly with students as he is trying to develop intervention tactics and strategies for assisting those students who are most in need of assistance on the same time least likely to seek out that assistance.
Central Printing will be closed Monday Nov. 14 and Tuesday Nov. 15.

The Open Pages series at UPEI’s Robertson Library welcomes John Cousins to discuss his book New London: The Lost Dream. The event is Wednesday, November 16 at 7 pm, in the second floor common area of the Robertson Library.
New London: The Lost Dream tells the true story of brave Quakers from London, England who settled along PEI’s north shore in 1773. This book is an excellent recreation of how some of the Island’s first European settlers arrived, survived, and occasionally thrived in the “new world.”
New London: The Lost Dream is published by Island Studies Press at UPEI. For more details, see “Recent Titles” at http://projects.upei.ca/isp/.
Open Pages features local authors speaking about their books: what inspired them, what they learned, and what they shared. The public is warmly invited to this evening, which takes place in the common area on the second floor of the UPEI Robertson Library. Light refreshments will be served, and books will be for sale and signing by the author.
For more information, contact Joan Sinclair at Island Studies Press at ispstaff@upei.ca, or Simon Lloyd in the Robertson Library, slloyd@upei.ca.
Central Printing will be closed Monday Nov. 14 and Tuesday Nov. 15.

The November Island Studies Lecture will be Tuesday, November 15, at 7 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge on the UPEI campus, featuring Dr. Jean Mitchell of UPEI’s Sociology/Anthropology Department sharing “Stories of Weathering Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu.” With winds of up to 300 kph, Cyclone Pam was the largest cyclone to make landfall in the South Pacific islands since recordkeeping started. It struck the island of Vanuatu on March 13, 2015, leaving in its wake enormous losses of infrastructure, housing, animals, and food gardens. But why did so few islanders die during the cyclone and its aftermath? Join Dr. Mitchell as she presents powerful insights into how to survive a cyclone. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend. For more info, contact Laurie at brinklow@upei.ca.
