Depending upon the work requirements of University departments, the Christmas holiday schedule will be in effect from December 25, 2023, through January 1, 2024, inclusive. Office and regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.
Payroll deadlines:
For the December 22 pay, the deadline for PTFs, pay changes, etc., are due by noon on November23. Timesheets/overtime are due December 11 on 10:00 am.
For the January 5 pay, the deadline for PTFs, pay changes, etc., are due by noon on December 7. Timesheets/overtime are due on January 2 at 10:00 am.

Dr. Joshua MacFadyen will launch a new book that offers an aerial view of PEI’s changing landscapes on November 29, 2023, at 7:30 pm, in the Faculty Lounge (Room 201), SDU Main Building, University of Prince Edward Island.
Published by Island Studies Press, Time Flies: A History of Prince Edward Island from the Air offers an unprecedented view of one island province’s journey into modernity through a unique blend of aerial photography and historical synthesis. The book presents images of iconic landscapes on Prince Edward Island and traces how those communities and natural ecosystems have changed over 85 years (1935–2020). Each site history illustrates and reflects on the nature of modern land use and land cover change in one of four chapters organized around primary resource economies, rural communities, urban development, and islands and coastal change. Time Flies offers a visually rich discussion of one island as the world and offers lessons that we can learn from the social and ecological transformation of PEI.
Dr. MacFadyen is the Canada Research Chair in Geospatial Humanities and an associate professor in the Applied Communication, Leadership, and Culture program at UPEI. His previous books include Flax Americana: A History of the Fibre and Oil That Covered a Continent and Time and a Place: An Environmental History of Prince Edward Island.
This book was published with the support of a Scholarly Book Award from the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and a SSHRC Exchange Publication Award from the Office of the Vice-President, Academic and Research at UPEI.

Overview: The Certificate in Workplace Mental Health and Well-Being is designed for individuals who endeavour to maintain a strong sense of well-being and good mental health among colleagues and themselves throughout these challenging times. This certificate program will involve three one-day courses that will examine topics such as signs and symptoms of weakening mental health, strengthening mental health and well-being, supporting others struggling with mental health and well-being, building resilience, psychological health and safety in the workplace, preventing and managing burnout, and managing time and productivity in order to reduce stress. At the end of the program, participants will be able to improve their mental health and well-being for themselves and others around them.
Designed for: People who want to monitor and/or improve mental health and well-being at home and at the workplace, among themselves and with co-workers and colleagues.
Duration: Three (3) courses for a total of eighteen (18) hours

The UPEI Jazz and Popular Music Ensemble is looking forward to sharing an exciting program of music on Tuesday, December 5, at 7:30 pm, on the SDU Stage in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. This 26-member ensemble is a hybrid of a jazz big band, including several vocalists, with a mixture of jazz, soul, funk, pop, and everything in between.
In addition to the full set, there will also be a variety of solo and small group performances curated by members of the ensemble. From Stevie Wonder to Weather Report, Dusty Springfield, Amy Winehouse, Peter Gabriel, singer-songwriters, and Latin fusion, there's something for everyone!
On November 30 at 7:30 pm, the UPEI Wind Symphony will have its inaugural performance in the new Performing Arts Centre at the UPEI Campus.
The performance, entitled “Flashes and Apparitions,” will be led by conductors Nicole Strum and Dale Sorensen. The performance will feature works by Pulitzer Prize winner Augusta Read Thomas, Irish composer Amanda Feery, Juno award-winning Canadian composer Jordan Nobles, and the Atlantic Canadian premiere of Nerve and Verve by PEI’s own Evan Hammell.
This is a 45-minute drop-in session where we will look at some basic slide design principles and then spend time redesigning one of your own slide decks.

The Search Committee for Dean of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research and Applied Studies (IKERAS) announces upcoming Talking Circles and public presentations by each of the two finalist candidates. Since the search began in June, the committee has conducted a comprehensive search and selected the following finalists for a series of meetings on campus.
Dr. Yvonne Poitras Pratt is an Associate Professor and a Research Excellence Chair at the University of Calgary. She traces her ancestral roots to Red River and more recently to Fishing Lake Métis Settlement in northern Alberta. As a Métis scholar, she has researched and published extensively in the areas of Indigenous education, digital media, social justice, Indigenous academic integrity, arts-based approaches, and Indigenous community development. Her 2020 book, Digital Storytelling in Indigenous Education: A Decolonizing Journey for a Métis Community, shares her decolonizing journey while working with members of the Fishing Lake Métis Settlement in the reclamation of silenced Métis voices and stories. Dr. Poitras Pratt has received numerous awards including a Community Service Award from the UCalgary Faculty Association in 2023, Metis Nation of Alberta (Region 3) Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023, and several other teaching and community engagement awards. She received a BA (2002) in Canadian Studies, and an MA (2005) and PhD (2011) in Communication Studies, all from the University of Calgary.

Dr. Angelina Weenie is Cree (nehiyaw) from Sweetgrass First Nation, Saskatchewan. She speaks Cree (y) dialect fluently. Dr. Weenie is an Associate Professor at the First Nations University of Canada, where she has served as a Department Head (2002 - 2012) and Program Coordinator of Indigenous Education (2016 - 2018). In these roles, she co-developed a Master of Indigenous Language Education (MILED) program in partnership with the University of Regina. Her research and teaching interests lie in Indigenous epistemology, culturally responsive pedagogy, approaches to Indigenous language reclamation, land-based pedagogy, and research methods with Indigenous peoples. Dr. Weenie has recently co-authored a book, Dance Your Style - Cree Pedagogy, to be released in February 2024. The book represents how Indigenous people can advance Indigenous Knowledge in education and research. She received a BEd (1979), BA (1989) in English, Postgraduate Diploma (1996) in Indian and Northern Education, and MEd (2002), all from the University of Saskatchewan, and PhD (2010) in Education from the University of Regina.

DASH offers coordinated services to researchers interested in accessing multi-regional data assets. UPEI's Secure Island Data Repository (SIDR) will soon be operational and able to assist with DASH projects.
Learn how DASH can help you navigate the data access process as well as the centralized services and tools available for researchers conducting multi-regional research projects, including
- single data access request form for researchers to request data from multiple regions
- access to support from experts at data centres across Canada
- an inventory of all the data assets available via HDRN Canada, and
- an algorithm inventory to aid in analysis of the data.

When working with large sets of numbers, it is often more useful to display the information graphically using histograms, scatter plots, bar charts, box plots, and other depictions. This workshop teaches participants how to gain insights into data through visualization using R as the programming language. Participants will learn how to create simple scatterplots, histograms, and box plots; compare the plotting features of base R and the ggplot2 package; plot with ggplot2; plot time series data; and arrange and export plots. Basic knowledge of R is recommended, although not mandatory.
This is the second session of our two-part series. This workshop will focus on collaborative development workflows using Git-collaboration sites like GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket, and will demonstrate how to work with branches, issue tracking, contribute to projects using pull-/merge-requests, code-review, how to run CI/CD-pipelines and use other common features of these platforms. Prerequisite: basic experience using Git version control, participation in the 21 November workshop, or attendance at the Git lecture of a software carpentry workshop.
Overview: Communication is critical to success in every field, especially in business and the workplace. In the Certificate in Professional Communications, participants will gain knowledge and practical experience in all key areas of communication, including proper workplace writing, public speaking and presentation skills, blog posts, websites, social media, and other forms of communication essential to functioning and growth in the professional world, as well as in-depth communication plans. This certificate is hybrid in nature; some content is online and asynchronous and some is in-person.
*Please note: If you already have completed the Intro to Workplace Writing course, you can take the rest of the certificate, and the price of the Intro to Workplace Writing course will be subtracted from the cost.
Designed for: People who deal with communication in businesses/organizations and in the workplace, from administrative professionals to communication officers, entrepreneurs, and executives.
