The Robertson Library invites the campus community to public presentations and mock classes by three candidates for the permanent-track position of Health Sciences and Scholarly Communications Librarian. Each candidate will present on the following topic:

"Looking to 2020 and beyond, what are the opportunities and challenges for the UPEI Library, as a smaller academic library, in providing scholarly communications services, and resources and services for the information needs of students and faculty in its veterinary medicine, nursing, and applied health science programs?"

Each presentation will be followed by a mock class on the Pubmed database.

All presentations and classes will be held in Robertson Library Room 265 (Library Instruction Centre — LINC), and the schedule is as follows:

  • Monday, June 12, Ms. Janice Hermer will present at 10:00 AM, followed by a mock class at approximately 11:00 AM.

  • Wednesday, June 21, Ms. Caitlin Bakker will present at 10:30 AM, followed by a mock class at approximately 11:30 AM.

All are welcome!

Dr. Jeff Stuart will give a presentation entitled “Oxygen and reactive oxygen in mammalian cells” on Monday, June 12, 2017 in Lecture Theatre C of the AVC at 10:00 am.

Dr. Stuart completed his PhD in Zoology at the University of Guelph, followed by post-doctoral fellowships in the Department of Biochemistry at Cambridge University and the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore, Maryland. He is currently on sabbatical from his position as Associate Professor in Biological Sciences at Brock University where his research focuses on mitochondrial and cellular ROS metabolism in the context of aging and longevity.

Everyone welcome!

There have been a few incidents on campus recently where crows have swooped individuals in what we assume is an attempt to obtain food. Members of the campus community are reminded to refrain from feeding birds and other wildlife such as foxes.

While birds and other wildlife might seem hungry, feeding them just isn't a good idea. Here's why:

1. “People” food isn’t good for animals.
2. It makes wild animals lose their natural fear of people and they can become a nuisance.
3. Wild animals who depend on people for food can cause injuries or spread disease.

Thank-you for your co-operation!

The Office of Recruitment and International Relations (ORIR) is seeking volunteers to serve as conversational partners during its summer programs. The camps will be ongoing throughout the summer beginning on July 4. Click here for more information or contact Tara Corman at tcorman@upei.ca to get involved.

The awards go to a UPEIFA member, staff member, or volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the research enterprise at UPEI.

This year, two recipients have been selected. Leslie Cudmore, research grants coordinator, and Dr. Pedro Quijon, associate professor in the Department of Biology, will be recognized for their work to help promote the community of research and discovery at UPEI.

As part of the roofing repairs that were completed last fall on Kelley Memorial Building, MRJ Construction have been contracted to replace the flashing on the upper east side of the Building, this work will begin on Wednesday, June 7 and will take approximately 1-week to complete (weather dependent).

While the contractors have been instructed that the work should be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we proceed with this renovation project that will enhance the facility.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jackie MacPhail at 566-6034, jmacphail@upei.ca.

Onyx the beagle is available for adoption and is anxiously waiting for his forever home. He is 4-years-old, fully vaccinated, and neutered. Onyx is a very sweet boy and gets along really well with the other beagles. Unfortunately, he has shown some aggression to one other breed of dog. For this reason, it is recommended he goes to a household without any other pets.

If you or someone you know might be interested in working with this little guy please contact Melissa Hamel at (902) 218-0514 or mhamel@upei.ca.
