Indian Horse follows the story of Saul, a young hockey player, from his life with his family in Northern Ontario, into residential school, and beyond where he finds fame as a hockey player. Based on the book by Richard Wagamese. Alma MacDougall,Elder, will be introducing the film. Open to the campus community. This event is 2:00 pm, Wednesday, October 3 in room 135 of Duffy Science Centre.

Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to everyone including graduate students.
Please note: those who attended training in 2015 or earlier are currently due for the Biosafety Refresher Course.
To attend the Basic Biosafety course, you must pre-register by contacting Kathryn Harrison, before October 8, 2018 by email (kharrison@upei.ca) or by phone (902-566-0901).

UPEI is aligning functional areas that are related to student affairs and the recruitment/registration process into the recently renovated Dalton Hall—our new Student Experience Hub! And with renovations to the over 100-year-old Dalton Hall now complete, it means it’s moving time! Interested in Indigenous Cultures? UPEI's Master in Global Affairs will be hosting a presentation by Wise Elder Doña Sonia Catepillán Guinao (Chile). We invite all interested students and the community to attend the Skype presentation during which Doña Sonia will share her experience growing up as an Indigenous Williche woman in southern Chile. All are invited. The presentation will take place Wednesday October 3rd from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm in SDU Main Building, Room 211 (UPEI Campus). Light refreshments will be served. Flags at UPEI will be flown at half-mast on Sunday, September 30 to commemorate Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day. In 1998, the Government of Canada officially proclaimed the last Sunday of September of every year as National Memorial Day to give Canadians an opportunity each year to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers, which made the ultimate tragic sacrifice to keep our communities safe.

About Dr. Denton:
Dr. Peter Denton works in the social, cultural and ethical dimensions of technology in multi-disciplinary contexts. He chairs the Policy Committee of the Green Action Centre and has been involved in UN Environment since 2012 as a civil society representative and as a contributing author to the GEO 6 North American Regional Assessment (2016). Dr. Denton is a principal consultant at greenethics.ca, inc., and holds multiple degrees, including a PhD in Religion and the Social Sciences from McMaster University. He is also an ordained minister in the United Church of Canada. He currently teaches history of technology at the University of Winnipeg and is an Adjunct Associate Professor of History at the Royal Military College of Canada.
This event is co-sponsored by UPEI Environmental Studies Program and the Kirk of St. James. It is a free, public event. All are welcome.

Orange Shirt Day occurs annually at the end of each September, the time of year when Indigenous children were taken away from their homes and put into residential schools. Phyllis Wedstad was one such child. As a young child on her first day at residential school, Phyllis’ favourite orange shirt was promptly taken from her upon her arrival at the school. Her language and pride in her culture was also taken from her. Orange Shirt Day has been created in honour of Phyllis, and the many other children who attended residential schools. This year on September 28, 2018, the UPEI is encouraging all students, staff, and faculty to wear orange as an annual opportunity to discuss aspects of residential schools, and to continue discussions year-round.
