Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to everyone including graduate students.

Please note: those who attended training in 2017 or earlier are currently due for the Biosafety Refresher Course.

To attend the Basic Biosafety course, you must pre-register by contacting Dr. Rhoda Speare, before February 11, 2020 by email (hse@upei.ca) or by phone (902-620-5071).

The Black Cultural Society of PEI has partnered with the UPEI International Student Office to host a panel discussion called "Creating A New Dynamic on Campus" as part of Black History Month 2020. The event will take place in The Fox & Crow in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre beginning at 5:00 pm.

With the growth of a Black student body on PEI comes the need for increased support and advocacy. Advocacy can come in many forms but one option that is common among post-secondary institutions is the Black Student Union. During this panel, issues around advocacy, skill-sharing and mentorship in academic and non-academic life will be explored. Are Black Student Unions the next step in creating a new dynamic for our university and colleges in PEI?

The UPEI Music Department Recital Series 2019-2020 is hosting the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra (NBYO) at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall on Sunday, February 9, at 2:00 pm. The stage will be full with 76 young musicians who have been touring the Maritime provinces.

Robertson Library and WUSC UPEI invite you to attend a screening of the documentary Lost Boys of Sudan.

Lost Boys of Sudan is a documentary film by Megan Mylan and Jon Shenk about two Dinka boys from Sudan who travel from a refugee camp in Kenya to the United States to escape the civil war in their country.

Admission is free, but there will be donations accepted at the door to raise money for the Shine A Light program, an initiative that provides women and girls within refugee camps the opportunity to better their education.

Providing content for a course is the easy part of a course's development. Figuring out how to explain to students what that content will do for them is far more challenging. International Development Week is an annual initiative held during the first week of February since 1991 to engage Canadians on global issues. Canadians can reflect on our contributions to poverty reduction and international humanitarian assistance.

The theme for 2020 is "Go for the Goals" referring to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The theme illustrates the idea of moving forward in a collaborative and positive way toward a better world.

The 17 goals and 169 targets look at wiping out poverty, fighting inequality, and tackling climate change over the next 15 years.

Students, faculty, and staff at UPEI are invited to participate in a research project titled Evaluating UPEI Student and Faculty/Staff Interest in WOOFS (Wellness-Oriented Outreach for Students & Staff). Honours student Amy MacQuarrie, under the supervision of Dr. Tracy Doucette in the Psychology Department here at UPEI, is conducting a campus-wide survey on this topic.

The purpose of this research project is to examine UPEI student and faculty/staff interest in a proposed comfort dog program on campus (WOOFS). In addition, it will also explore
connections between pet attitudes and comfort/therapy dog programs. Students enrolled in PSY 1020 will receive a 1% bonus credit in PSY 1020 for participating. Students and faculty/staff not enrolled in PSY 1020 will be entered into a draw for the chance to win a $50 gift card! Students enrolled in PSY 1020 who do not wish to complete the survey may complete an alternative writing assignment for extra credit.

The Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI is partnering with DEXCAN to recruit dog owners to test a new oral delivery system for administering medicine to dogs.

The purpose of the study is to test whether a dog owner can repeatedly choose the right dose of medicine, according to the instructions, and whether the applicator is easy to use. Training will be provided by a veterinary nurse before the testing. No dogs and no drugs are involved. The applicator will contain a placebo (a substance that has no effect).

Participating dog owners will visit the clinic twice: once for recruitment and training, and then 4–7 days later for the user test. After the test, participants will receive a small compensation for their time (CAD $15 for each visit; CAD $30 for the 2 visits of the study).

You could be eligible to participate in this test if you are 18 years or older, and a dog owner. The test will be performed in January and February of this year at the AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
