Students from UPEI’s Kinesiology 3430 class are seeking participants to take part in a four-week exercise training program, plus pre- and post-assessment sessions (six weeks in total). Students will create personalized exercise training programs for each participant, based on their fitness, skill level, and personal interests. Participants must be between 30-70 years of age. This program is directed toward individuals who are looking to become more physically active in their day-to-day lives. Participants will meet in person with their student trainers once a week. No previous experience is necessary.
The program runs on Mondays (3:30-5:00 pm), Tuesdays (2:30-4:00 pm), and Thursdays (2:30-4:00 pm) beginning the week of October 7. To register, go to https://forms.gle/drCp2HXHcvNTtdp29

Dr. Jessica Riddell, professor of early modern literature at Bishop’s University, will give the second Shannon K. Murray Lecture on Hope and the Academy on September 3, at 11 am, in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, Steel Building, UPEI. Her presentation is titled "The Times are Urgent: We must Slow Down. Building Hope Circuits for ourselves and in community."
Dr. Riddell is holder of the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair of Undergraduate Teaching Excellence at Bishop’s University; a 3M National Teaching Fellow; author of Hope Circuits: Rewiring Universities and other Systems for Human Flourishing (MQUP, 2024); author of Shakespeare's Guide to Hope, Life, and Learning (UTP, 2023) with Drs. Lisa Dickson and Shannon Murray; and founder of the Hope Circuits Institute. She was awarded the William and Nancy Turner Award for Teaching Excellence (2011-2012) at Bishop’s University, received the 3M National Teaching Fellowship in 2015, was the recipient of a D2L Innovation Award for Teaching and Learning in 2022, and won the inaugural awards from Forces Avenir (Quebec) for Most Engaged Faculty/Staff Member in 2022.
In her consultations and through the Hope Circuits Institute, Dr. Riddell pursues “an expansive call for the reinvention of universities and the renewal of their public mission. Dr. Riddell is a leading intellectual on the intersection between the humanities and higher education. She is one of Canada’s most prolific public scholars on the role universities play in a civil, just society and regularly convenes conversations about how education shapes creative democracy.”
The UPEI Faculty of Arts established the Shannon K. Murray Lecture on Hope and the Academy in 2023 to honour the achievements of Dr. Shannon Murray, an award-winning professor of English and a 3M National Teaching Fellow. In 2022, Dr. Murray was awarded the Christopher Knapper Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, one of the highest honours awarded in Canada for teaching and learning in higher education. All are welcome.
This year’s NSO Welcome Week will take place from August 30 to September 7, featuring a fantastic lineup of events and activities to welcome new students to UPEI—from academic sessions to social events. Our goal is to ensure that every new student feels supported, connected, and ready to embark on their university journey.
The week kicks off on August 30 with Residence Move-in Day, NSO Check-in, a Student Services fair, and many other events.
A highlight of Welcome Week will be a free BBQ in the Quad, hosted by UPEI President Wendy Rodgers and the New Student Orientation (NSO) leaders, on Tuesday, September 3, from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm for the entire campus community, featuring games, activities, music, prizes, free tickets, and more. During the BBQ, members of the UPEI Security Services team will be encouraging and assisting people to download the UPEI SAFE app. Everyone is also encouraged to download the UPEI PantherRec app to have a chance to win a UPEI-branded t-shirt, and to wear their UPEI colours and gear!
At the BBQ, faculty and staff can pick up their complimentary tickets to the UPEI Women’s Rugby home opener, which will take place on September 7 at 2 pm. Full-time students always have free admission to Panther home games.

The call for proposals to present at the 2024 Annual AAU Teaching Showcase has been extended to August 30.
Those whose proposals are selected from this call for submissions will be invited to have their work included in the conference proceedings. Proposals are open to presenters who are affiliates or members of an AAU institution submitting proposals on teaching and learning in higher education.

They will be using Open Journal Systems (OJS) to review all proposals and to publish them following the conference. To submit to OJS, you will need to first let us know of your intent to submit so we can create a secure account for you in OJS.

Dr. Jessica Riddell, professor of literature at Bishop’s University, will facilitate a workshop for UPEI colleagues on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, starting at 9:00 am. Join colleagues from across the campus for this workshop focused on building our capacities for educational leadership and re-wiring classrooms that center human and ecological flourishing. Jessica will facilitate reflections on our individual origin stories that brought us to the academy and particularly to learning and teaching spaces. Once we have reflected on what called us to this work as educators, we will do some work on "re-membering" and centering purpose, giving thought to how we might anchor this purpose in our practices as university educators. An RSVP is requested but not required to attend. If you would like to read Dr. Riddell's book in preparation for the workshop, there are limited paper copies of the book available from the office of the Dean of Arts. In addition, the Robertson Library has a couple of physical copies on reserve and access to the e-book.

The University of Prince Edward Island has teamed up with the Chief Public Health Office (CPHO) of PEI to provide UPEI students and any member of the University community at risk of experiencing or witnessing a drug-related overdose with free Naloxone kits through the provincial Take Home Naloxone Program.
Naloxone (also called Narcan) is a fast-acting medication used to temporarily reverse an opioid overdose until medical help arrives. Naloxone can restore breathing within 2 to 5 minutes and is safe for all ages. It only works for those who have opioids in their system. It does not create dependence, and it is safe to keep a Naloxone kit on hand.

Renewal of Employee Parking Permits who use payroll deduction is now open for Faculty and Staff for 2024–2025. Please visit the UPEI Security web page and select “Buy a staff or faculty parking pass” or click on the app link below (note: app will not work with Internet Explorer). Permits holders in Lots B, C, DRC, and reserved spaces have no expiry date, but must be renewed yearly as well.
Please DO NOT select the lot you may wish to move into—that is what the wait list is for (see below). New employees will be assigned to the General Lots. All permit holders will be reassigned to their current lot/space.
We would like to advise that there will be an increase in permits this year. The last increase for a permit was in 2014. The cost of a permit will increase by 5%. This change will affect any permits issued or sold for the 2024-2025 school year. If you use payroll deductions your biweekly deductions will increase on September 13, 2024.
If you use payroll deduction, and no longer use a UPEI lot to park, please email parking@upei.ca so we can stop your deduction.
Employees taking a leave of absence from UPEI and using parking lots B, C, F, G, or DRC must email parking@upei.ca with their ID#, name, departure date, and expected return date to maintain access to their assigned lot.
All fields with a red asterisk must be filled in, including office phone number and if you have an electric vehicle.
If you have a student in your household that is starting UPEI in September and they have their own vehicle, remember to include the vehicle info, their name, and ID# on the application if you are paying for their parking. Students will only be assigned a general permit.
If you are in a gated lot and you have a student that will be using your vehicle to come and go during the workday, please include their information on the application as an additional driver. If you wish to add additional information after you have submitted your form, you must resubmit a new application and inform parking@upei.ca that you have done so.
If you change your vehicle, please email parking with the Make, Model, Province/State, Plate #.
If you would like to be added to the wait list for a designated lot or wish to change lots, please email parking@upei.ca with the following information. (Note: if you are already on the wait list there is no need to resubmit.) While you are on the waitlist, you will be assigned to your current lot until a spot opens in your requested location.
