Sisters in Spirit vigils have been held every October 4 since 2006 in the memory of Canada’s murdered and missing Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people. Sisters in Spirit Day raises public awareness to ensure that everyone, regardless of their cultural background, is aware of this crisis of violence and calls on us take action.

What each of us can do:

  • Support Indigenous, BIPOC, and 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and organization in their work. Attend community events and respectfully listen to their messages. Educate yourself.
  • Read Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and their Calls for Justice.
  • Learn about Indigenous and colonial history from an Indigenous perspective. Learn about the integral roles of women and Two Spirit people within Indigenous culture.
  • When you see or hear actions, behaviours, or words that are harmful, ask questions, speak up, or check in. Try to mitigate the harm.

UPEI will host Research on Tap with a presentation titled “Render unto Caesar: Catholics and the Alt-Right” on Wednesday, October 2, at 6 pm, at the Upstreet Brewery Taproom, 41 Allen St., Charlottetown, PEI.

Dr. Ariana Patey, assistant professor, Department of Religious Studies, is the guest speaker for the event.

“The Internet has facilitated the creation of an Alt-Right movement that includes Catholics,” she said. “This talk explores the ways in which such groups understand and use Catholicism (and the Internet) to attract followers to extremist and white supremacist movements.”

Dr. Patey’s presentation was originally scheduled for last March but had to be postponed at that time because of inclement weather.

Research on Tap is a discussion series featuring UPEI researchers and is open to students, faculty, staff, and the general public. There is no charge to attend. All are welcome to attend.

Each year, Treaty Day is celebrated on October 1. This day serves as the official recognition of the historic Peace and Friendship Treaties between the Mi’kmaq and the Crown. These treaties guarantee the Mi’kmaq right to hunt, fish, gather, and earn a reasonable living, and still stand today. While these treaties sought to achieve a peaceful coexistence, the Mi’kmaq were never conquered, and never surrendered, gave up or ceded their land. Mi’kma’ki is still Mi’kmaw territory.

Everyone is encouraged to recognize we are all treaty people. Being a treaty person means recognizing Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq Treaty Rights so we can move towards reconciliation together.

All are welcome to attend the second annual Treaty Day Mawi'omi from 12 noon–5 pm at the Eastlink Centre, 46 Kensington Road, Charlottetown, featuring opportunities to learn traditional Mi'kmaw customs, dances, songs, art, games, and more.
